Turning an operational blind spot into a specialist product

FryerMate is a mobile-first operating system concept for independent fish and chip shops, designed to make shifts, evidence, exceptions and customer feedback visible when the owner is not on site.

Think Menai took the opportunity from sector research and product architecture through name, positioning, conversion journey, secure PHP application foundation and production deployment.

The challenge

Owners needed confidence in the shift, not another place to record a tick.

  • 01The real picture was fragmented

Paper, messages, spreadsheets and memory could record activity, but not create one dependable view of evidence, failure and follow-through.

  • 02Generic software missed the trade

Opening, fryer oil, preparation, hold times, handover, shutdown and customer feedback needed the language and rhythm of a working chippy.

  • 03A big vision still needed a credible first step

The proposition had to be marketable before every feature existed, with compliance limits and third-party dependencies made clear.

What we built

One focused product story from shift floor to production stack

We began with the operator's real job: knowing whether the shop is under control when they step away. Seventeen operating domains were mapped into a deliberately staged product rather than an indiscriminate feature list.

The proposition now connects a specialist brand and pilot acquisition journey with a production-deployed first application slice. That slice turns reviews into a controlled workflow for classification, draft replies, escalation, approval and auditable action.

It is a practical example of our approach to specialist SaaS and business app development: define the commercial job, narrow the first release, engineer the operational safeguards and validate before expanding.

AI can classify and prepare. Deterministic policy and named people decide what is safe to publish.A clear responsibility boundary
  1. 01

    Sector research and product architecture

The market, owner anxieties, shop-floor workflows, competitor patterns and phased feature priorities were translated into a defensible niche proposition.

  2. 02

    Brand and pilot acquisition journey

FryerMate gained a distinctive name, product-led interface language, mobile-first marketing site and focused route for founding operators to register interest.

  3. 03

    Production application foundation

A lightweight PHP and MariaDB platform provides secure sessions, business-scoped roles, queues, audit records, OAuth connections, operational controls and scheduled work.

  4. 04

    Responsible review intelligence

Structured AI analysis supports draft replies and prioritisation, while deterministic policy holds lower-rated, sensitive or uncertain reviews for human attention.

The observable result

A credible vertical SaaS product ready for operator validation

FryerMate now has a clear market position, a live acquisition journey and a production application foundation. Pilot outcomes are not being claimed before live operator and platform acceptance work is complete.

Market

The value is understandable before the feature list

Owners meet the commercial promise first: visible control of the shift when they cannot be physically present.

Engineering

The first application slice has testable safeguards

Release evidence covers 61 automated tests, 127 assertions, role boundaries, failure handling, auditability and controlled publication paths.

Growth path

The product can expand from evidence

The pilot route, staged operating domains and external approval gates make the next build decisions observable rather than speculative.

The lesson for niche software

Go deep enough to make the trade feel understood.

We can join commercial positioning, a conversion-focused website, a measurable acquisition journey and production engineering around one specialist problem, without pretending the technology removes human responsibility.
